Dear Reader,

Southeast Asia has been in recent years been plagued with multiple reports of piracy, kidnap for ransom, and theft-at-sea cases. In the last decade, the rate of increase in Southeast Asian maritime piracy cases has outstripped that of the Gulf of Aden and West African regions. This has led some to conclude that Southeast Asia is emerging as the next global piracy hotspot.

This industry report examines some of the key issues that contribute the increase and takes a closer look at some of the specific programmes by the three littoral states that are responsible over the region’s most troubled waters – Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia.

It will also highlight some of the defence procurement opportunities that have emerged as a result of these troubling developments.
